Maya Angelou

Quote Challenge-day 2

You can tell just by looking at her, she knew.  She knew how to overcome, love herself and she knew what she deserved.  I kinda think she was a badass in her own right.

“I love to see a young girl go out and grab the world by the lapels.  Life’s a bitch, you’ve got to go out and kick ass.”

Rules if you accept the challenge is to post 1-3 quotes for three days and nominate three other wonderfully talented bloggers to the challenge as well.  Today I’d like to see if the following three bloggers will participate.

  1. I got curious about Maya Angelou some years back. I suppose Oprah fawning over her made me want to know her better.

I especially loved hearing Maya speak. Her smile and laugh were infectious, and her words had meaning far beyond just going – -yeah, sure, right.

First, I tackled a book of Maya’s poems. They were pretty deep for me, but now I know I didn’t have Maya’s back story. Once you read “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings,” you suddenly get it. It’s in the raising up. It’s in the beginnings of a child’s life. It’s what they see everyday, hear everyday, experience everyday, and who mentors them. It’s the God in their lives, it’s grandma when mama and daddy isn’t around.

Strong…your betcha. Tenacious…absolutely. A teacher…take me to school. Courageous…where’s my broom stick. Humble…she would wash your feet. Human…with a heart to match. Free…no human master would ever touch a hair on her head.
